So I decided to change out the one sata drive for another. Going from 1 TB to 3 TB.
When trying to "import" or autoimport, I kept getting the error " The selected disk was not verified for this import rule". Doing some google'ing got me some pages on fsck. That turned out to be not the case here. A better search was adding a disk to Freebsd.

In particular, we need to create the partition
(in our case this is the 4th drive so the drive name contains a 3, ie if it was the third drive then it would be 2, second would be 1 and the first drive would be 0)
here is the command we used: gpart create -s GPT ada3
then : gpart add -t freebsd -fs ada3
next we create a file system: newfs -U /dev/ada3p1 (the ada3p1 will be the result of the previous command).

Normally on a linux system you would now create a directory and also a mount point but we were able to return (from the shell) to the gui and import the volume correctly.

    Ta da
